TEST [EN] – Cast Antagonist tires: racing feel and performance for all riders!

We had the opportunity to test a pair of Cast Antagonist tires for several months in all conditions, including a couple of training sessions on snow!

For those unfamiliar with Cast, a company that not only makes tires but also offers grips, saddles, handlebars, and stems, here’s their story.

Mountain biking and gravity sports deserve brands that truly care about cyclists, the sport, and the community. Cast was founded by a group of world-renowned gravity athletes, engineers, and designers who understand these challenges firsthand. With the contributions of legends like Greg Minnaar, Danny MacAskill, Fabio Wibmer, and Kriss Kyle, we are bridging the gap between product, innovation, and community.

For the past three years, we’ve worked side by side with elite athletes to develop high-performance tires and components, rigorously tested in real-world conditions. Partnerships with industry leaders like Pirelli give us access to cutting-edge technologies, ensuring every product is designed to deliver maximum performance. At the same time, we’re reinvesting in the MTB community by supporting local retailers, bike brands, and cycling destinations that make mountain biking special.

INSTALLATION/FEATURES

The quality of the tires is also evident in this. Classic installation on our 30 mm internal rim and manual bead seating without levers. Instantly pressurized, without leaks or damage to the rigid arch.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE HEAD OF CAST’S TIRE DEPARTMENT

This article features a unique and highly interesting interview with Thomas Callaghan, head of Cast’s tire department, where we discussed technical aspects, the development phase, and a focus on Cast’s design and future ideas.

DRY TEST

Grip, grip, and more grip! The first impression when entering corners and braking is of impressive grip and tire stability that gives you a huge amount of feeling and confidence. You can clearly feel the work of the knobs and the grip on the ground.

The transition from straight to lean in a corner is lightning-fast, and the lateral side of the tire does the rest with a very stable compound that continues to provide excellent grip, just like the center.

Records are pouring in on the Strava segments on our usual routes because you can enter at almost double the speed and the line is stable and precise.

Excellent resistance to lateral impacts on rocks and larger obstacles.

The rear follows the same feeling as the front, interacting well and following the settings. Those who like a modern, front-loaded, and aggressive ride will have everything they’re looking for in this Cast Antagonist combination.

WET TEST

The already excellent sensations experienced in dry conditions seem to be amplified and enhanced in wet conditions. Grip and braking stability are excellent. When cornering, the grip of the side knobs and their deformation are optimized for maximum safety. You can go fast easily and naturally without fear of losing grip. It’s even difficult at the beginning to understand when the tire will lose support because the limit is moved much further forward.

The combination we tested, despite the Protagonist is a more aggressive variant, gave us an excellent sense of stability and balance, with performance uniform and well-distributed across both front and rear wheel demands.

In all test conditions, we noted low rolling resistance compared to the Cast tread pattern, another strong point and a significant development effort in combining two technically distant characteristics—grip and smoothness—in the same tire.

TEST – EXTRA – ON SNOW

During our months of testing, there were days with heavy snowfall, allowing us to test the tires in mixed snow, ice, and mud.

The tires offered incredible performance stability. Only ice, as with all tires, compromised our handling, but this obviously shouldn’t be considered a defect; rather, it was completely normal behavior. On fresh snow, the tread blocks performed excellently, as well as in wet conditions. When the snow melted and gave way to mixed mud, we still experienced excellent grip, with a progressive and noticeable loss of grip that allowed for good anticipation with corrective maneuvers and control without overdoing it.

We confirm their excellent ability to clear mud and terrain on both wet and snowy surfaces! Ironically, they’re even more enjoyable to drive in mixed wet conditions than in dry conditions.

They’re very easy to use and take advantage of their excellent qualities, benefiting safety and ride quality.

VIDEO TEST AND RIDING IMPRESSIONS

For those interested in further information, we’ve created a POV during a test and training session, where we share our impressions in a more authentic and less technical way, directly on the most beautiful trails in the Tuscan-Emilian and Romagna hills.

CONCLUSIONS

Cast tires surprised us with their overall build quality and exceptional grip, especially in mixed and wet conditions. The tire’s ability to deform during aggressive riding, with constant carcass support, also benefits lateral impact resistance, and excellent rolling resistance with our Antagonist front and rear tires. This product offers all riders the opportunity to have a more than premium—we’d say directly racing—product, with great ease of use and excellent performance, all to the benefit of safety and ride quality.
